Universal design modifications should maintain a home's value. Here are some to accomodate Vera and Bob's accessibility needs:
- Remove the entire shower and tub unit, the vanity, the toilet, the entry door, and the floor.
- To allow room for a walker or wheelchair, install a new 34” to 36” entry door with lever handle hardware.
- Replace the tub with a new low-profile or zero-degree curb-less shower. The new curb-less shower setup would grant a caregiver the ability to stand in the shower to assist Bob and allow Vera easier access. The shower could also be accessed with a walker or wheelchair.
- Install a lever-style thermostatically controlled and pressure-balanced shower valve with an independent handheld shower.
- Install solid in-wall blocking for stylish new grab bars prior to the installation of new acrylic shower panels.
- Accessorize new shower with a flip-down shower seat sporting a teak wood slatted top, soap receptacles, shampoo caddy and grab bars. Bob could then sit on the flip-down shower seat and use the convenient handheld shower.
- Replace the toilet with a comfort-height elongated toilet and an all-in-one wash lid toilet seat for personal hygiene.
- Install a new sloped apron vanity with an under-mount sink for cleaning ease and for wheelchair access. A new lever-style faucet would function easily for Vera’s arthritic hands.
- Install non-slip tile and increase overall lighting to complete a safe and fully functional bathroom.
